Thomas Thwaites built a toaster. He then wrote a book about it, spoke at the PSFK CONFERENCE LONDON 2010 and gave a TED talk. Clearly, this was not an ordinary toaster–it was an object that gave him unique insights into how modern everyday products are made. As a society, we take things for granted – toasters, for example, which are objects that take an entire civilization and millennia of knowledge to assemble. Thomas learned this firsthand in his brave attempt to create a toaster totally from scratch, going deep into iron mines to get ore for steel and searching for crude oil to manufacture plastic in his backyard.
